TEACHER PREVIEW SESSION

You’ll learn about Smithsonian classroom resources, interact with other teachers who are also incorporating the SHOUT program into their curriculum, and discover how to stay connected through various social media sites. This online preview will allow you to plan ahead for the upcoming conference sessions and will be a forum for discussion of incorporating global environmental issues into the classroom.

Margaret BensonMargaret Benson, Online Community Manager at the National Museum of Natural History, will highlight the Ocean Portal website (http://ocean.si.edu/) and its features for the classroom.

 

 

Josh FalkJosh Falk, Shout Environmental Education Specialist from the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center, will highlight his past experience with Shout and introduce the Water Matters theme for 2012.

 

 

Nichole HeyenNichole Heyen is the Principal of Lincoln Magnet School (LMS), a middle school within District 186 in Springfield, Illinois. As the instructional leader focused on integrated curriculum and hands on challenged based learning she is committed to the school mission of preparing students to be outstanding global citizens. Such commitment earned LMS a 2011 National High Performing Blue Ribbon School Award from the US Department of Education and four consecutive Apple Distinguished School awards. Most recently, she was named a Terrel H. Bell recipient for educational leadership by the US Department of Education, one of only 7 nationwide last year.

 

 

Ashley NaranjoAshley Naranjo, Shout Teacher Liaison at Smithsonian Center for Education and Museum Studies, will highlight all the unique ways to stay connected to SHOUT through posting student work, liking Facebook, following Twitter, technology tutorials, the new Smithsonian Badges system and more!

 

 

Layne ZimmersLayne Zimmers has been a middle school teacher for six years, currently at Lincoln Magnet School, a 2011 High Performing National Blue Ribbon School, where she teaches sixth-grade world history and language arts and eighth-grade research writing. A recent educational service trip to Tanzania, that introduced Layne and her colleagues to unsanitary living conditions, including life without adequate clean water, inspired them to develop a yearlong, interdisciplinary classroom project that focuses on the global water crisis. Now students are also becoming active in the global community, fundraising to support actual solutions for the water crisis.
